1. Start up time: The time it takes your computer to stop loading programs, so you can finally start your work.

XP machines go to Run in the start button, then type “msconfig” then to start up tab. Then disable the programs you don’t’ need at start up. Trust me you will be able to tell what you do and don’t need.

Vista and windows 7 users everything’s the same except you don’t have to go to run just type “msconfig” into search bar at bottom of the start pearl.

Restart computer and you see your hard drive and CPU doing less work at start up and getting you on your way to what you want to be doing.

2. System memory(RAM): Check the amount of ram your computer see and uses. Especially on older XP machines. Most manufactures send computers with just enough of everything to get you by. Upgrading RAM is a cheap and easy way to speed up your PC.

First we will see how much RAM Windows sees and uses, by going to my computer right clicking and going down to properties and selecting it. This will show you a useful screen for a lot of things, but right now we’re looking for RAM. It should say it in gigabytes (i.e. 2.00GB)

Then off to the Internet for a fast and almost effortless memory scan. At Crucial memory scan

I have had Windows 7 beta for a couple of months now, and just upgraded to the release candidate 7100. I have it On a custom AMD Dual core machine, with dual monitors and 4 gigs of ram(well 32-bit windows only uses about 3.5 gigs) and My little Ausu Eee 1000AH with an upgrade of 2 gigs of ram and a 2 gig SD card for Windows Ready Boost. So far so good everything seems to be running like a well oiled machine. the only hick-up i have had so far is a couple of Vista driver Program ports. Some weird error messages, but nothing that effects the mission critical machine to run. If you never had Vista or just played around with it at a friends house…then Windows 7 might look somewhat the same to you. To the Vista veterans you tend to notice some subtle, but very nice and wanted changes. Even if you’re still rocking Windows XP SP3 and you don’t want to wipe the drive of all your years of favorite web sites, then you can shrink your existing portion and open up a minimum, of 16gigs and install a dual boot to run the RC and still have your Xp safe and sound.
